Lukang Riverside

Surrounding Environment and Architectural Planning

This project is situated on the southern side of the historic Lukang Old Street in Lukang Township, adjacent to the historic landmark of Longshan Temple. The site is bordered by the 15-metre wide Fuxing South Road and the waterfront park along Lukang River. The building’s frontage is approximately 20 metres wide and rises 14 storeys, with a setback terrace on the southern side of the 14th floor. In the architectural planning, the tower massing is positioned centrally on the site, with large areas of green space left in the front and rear courtyards on both the northern and southern sides. The setback configuration of the tower also reduces the visual impact of the building on the streetscape and the urban space of the waterfront park.

Exterior Design Theme

Traditional Minnan-style residential buildings commonly feature exterior walls constructed with red bricks paired with white plaster, and vertically oriented, louvered windows. The design of this building respects the historic character of Lukang’s ancient town, drawing inspiration from local materials and architectural elements. This influence is reflected in the proportions of the windows and the colour palette of the facades, which have been thoughtfully transformed and integrated into the design of the new structure.

Architectural Façade Design

The façades on both the north and south sides of the building are articulated by cutting the building mass and raising the corner elements, which are contrasted with vertical and horizontal lines. The elevated sections feature slender windows, complemented by vertical decorative columns across different levels, evoking the imagery of traditional vertical louvered windows. On the opposite side, balconies and cross beams are adorned with metal railings, creating a horizontal decorative band. This design unifies the building’s massing, which has been divided by the central void, and creates an interesting dialogue of vertical and horizontal lines with the opposing façade elements.

The colour scheme and materials of the façade reflect a respect for the historic architecture of Lukang while responding actively to its context. The primary materials for the external walls are red textured brick and white glazed brick, with accents of grey and white pebbledash, allowing the new building to naturally blend with the surrounding urban environment.

Ground-Level Landscape and Vertical Greenery

The landscape design concept for the ground-level garden draws inspiration from the organic, meandering urban spaces of historic Lukang. By using varying heights and staggered landscape flower beds and resting benches, the design evokes the diverse scales of the old town’s streets and public squares, creating a varied green space within the site. Planting selections focus on local species from Changhua, as well as trees and shrubs that can withstand the coastal winds, ensuring healthy growth of the vegetation. On the building’s vertical greenery, small trees are planted on the balconies of the south-facing apartments, while green flower beds are also added outside certain north-facing windows. The 14th-floor setback terrace garden further enhances the green façade design across multiple levels.

Architectural  Lighting

Given the project’s proximity to the historic Longshan Temple and Lukang Old Street, the night-time lighting design avoids overly bright elements, to prevent negative impacts on the surrounding nocturnal light environment. The façade is subtly illuminated with warm light at night, highlighting the architectural frames at the top of the building, as well as the lower floors and the ground-level walls. This creates a modest and warm residential image at night, harmonising with the atmosphere of this historic town.
