Classic Window Proportions + Contemporary Minimalist Lines + Indigenous Building Materials

Diverging from the conventional horizontal window designs typically found in terraced houses in Taiwan, this project adopts a vertically elongated height-to-width ratio for its floor-to-ceiling windows. Coupled with simple wall adornments, it crafts a distinct image of long windows with crisp lines and dynamic shadow interplay. Some of these floor-to-ceiling sliding windows are augmented by metal railings, forming Juliet balconies that offer residents a vantage point to gaze outside, concurrently enriching the facade’s aesthetic depth.

From an overall architectural perspective, the deliberate use of various exterior wall textures and colours, coupled with parapet designs, provides clear demarcation among individual units on the facade, emphasizing visual distinctiveness for each residence. Nevertheless, through consistent window proportions and fluctuations in exterior cladding materials, despite distinct colour schemes and detailed designs for each dwelling, collectively, the townhouse units harmoniously coexist under a shared architectural lexicon, akin to movements within a symphony.

In the interconnected building complex, fourth-floor setbacks to the front and rear have been incorporated. These not only serve as idyllic outdoor sanctuaries for residents but also enhance the open ambiance at ground level for pedestrians. Through distinct rooftop configurations, an intricate architectural skyline is delineated, adding depth to the overall design.

When considering materials for the architectural facade, priority has been given to locally sourced and commonly employed building materials. Predominantly, the design embraces the widespread usage of wall tiles and terrazzo seen in contemporary Taiwanese housing. The ceramic tiles exhibit a palette of three primary hues: beige, light grey, and brown, utilising kiln-fired multi-tonal materials. The terrazzo is predominantly white, complemented by deep grey accents. This warm colour palette not only fosters a sense of belonging within the residential community but also evokes the imagery of the warm-hued urban spaces of the historic brick town of Lukang.
